It’s been forever since I’ve been on here, but I’m back and better than ever – haha, just kidding I’m back and still the same. I promise I am going to try and start blogging more, as I’ve been radio silent lately. I’ll do another blog post to update ya on my life, but I figured I’d dedicate this blog post to my recent hair color questions I’ve been getting from a few of you on Instagram.
As some of you may have noticed, I recently moved from Los Angeles, where I was born and raised, and moved to New York City to take a job as the Social Media Director at L’Oreal USA. I’m overseeing the Hair Care, Style and Color categories. We just had a huge event in London to support the launch of our new semi-permanent hair dye, Colorista, and I figured I should support and take the plunge by dying my hair as I had never done it before. In order to use Colorista, you have to have blonde, bleached or medium brown hair, and I obviously have jet black hair, so I needed to do a little prep work. I was really nervous though because I had never done anything like this before. Spoiler alert – it was fun!
I used L’Oreal’s Feria Extra Bleach Blonde to initially bleach my hair. It took three bleaches to get my color to lift and to be the blonde that I wanted. Any more than three bleaches and my hair would have fried. Some people say when they get their hair bleached it can burn, but that wasn’t the case for me! After you bleach your hair, you have to use a brass banisher (I used this L’Oreal one) to make the blonde less brassy and opt for a lighter blonde shade. In addition, I also used Matrix So Silver Purple Shampoo to take care of the color and get it to a light blonde. Taking care of your hair right after you bleach is super important, so make sure you do it right. See the bottom photo below for what my hair looked like after three days of treatment.
After I rocked a blonde look for a while, I then applied Colorista. I opted for the purple Colorista because why not. Colorista is really cool because they have this clear mixer product that lessens the boldness of the look and makes it more of a light pastel color than a bold vibrant look. Colorista is super easy to use. You just apply a thick amount to your entire head starting from your roots and then throughout and let it sit for 15 – 20 minutes depending on the shade. Then, you simply wash it out and dry your hair and it’s dyed. It stays for 4 – 8 washes depending on the shade. It’s a cool way to test dying your hair without having to commit or for events/music festivals. You can get it at Target, Duane Reade, CVS, Ralphs, Walmart, Ulta and a few other locations and it’s really affordable and fun.
For the main photo, I also layered on a Colorista blue spray to create a merman-like hair style which I really enjoyed. The spray is one-day color but comes out at the end of the year – so make sure to stay tuned. I’m just serving ya a preview… you’re welcome.
I was super happy with the result and hope you enjoy my photos. Let me know if you guys end up using the product and want to learn more by DMing me or tagging me in your photos on Instagram @followmario. It’s good to be back
